The brave new world of artificial intelligence

“It’s going to be interesting to see how society deals with artificial intelligence, but it will definitely be cool.”

Colin Angle

Another technology that is likely to be important for independent consultants in the future is artificial intelligence (AI). AI has the potential to automate many routine tasks, freeing up independent consultants to focus on higher-level work. For example, AI could be used to automatically generate reports or analyze data, allowing consultants to spend more time on strategy and other high-value tasks.

ChatGPT continues to be in the headlines lately. It is currently considered by many to be the best artificial intelligence resource. Several articles address this on this website.

My first article on this topic was about interacting with ChatGPT in the form of a conversation. Immediately, I could see that this form of AI will have a remarkable impact on the way we live and work.

As I continued to use ChatGPT, I found that I could not rely on the facts and could not trace original references in many cases. Also, some information was inaccurate. However, ChatGPT is still developing rapidly. These problems are being ironed out. I have continued to work with ChatGPT and it is rapidly improving. Also, I have used other offshoots of ChatGPT in my work.

An article on The best AI chatbots: ChatGPT and other interesting alternatives to try mentions YouChat as the best alternative to ChatGPT. The Bing version of ChatGPT provides references, so does YouChat. Though YouChat also shows snippets of the websites used as references, whereas Bing’s version of ChatGPT does not.

The rapidly moving advancements in artificial intelligence make it likely that it will be increasingly useful for consultants.

More rapid or productive travel

“The reality about transportation is that it’s future-oriented. If we’re planning for what we have, we’re behind the curve.”

Anthony Foxx

Advances in the speed and flexibility of transportation are likely to save time in getting to business meetings and events.

Low orbit flights

A trail of light showing the trajectory of a low orbit flight There are bright, colorful lights on the ground and the sky is dark and filled with stars.

Recent news about Virgin Galactic, SpaceX, and Blue Origin‘s suborbital flights gained a lot of attention in the news. The emphasis right now is on space tourism. In the longer term, suborbital flights have the potential to become airline flights at incredible speeds to distant destinations. It may in the future be possible to fly from London to Australia in about an hour. At first, this will be very expensive, but if aircraft become sufficiently large to carry enough passengers, prices may allow for tourism and business.

More rapid trains

A blurred image of a very fast, modern train speeding though railway station.

MagLev trains have been around a long time and are improving. The fastest is in China at 267 miles per hour, but Japan is building a MagLev train that is expected to travel 314 miles per hour.

Autonomous trains already exist and more are on the way and expected to increase the efficiency and decrease the travel time to destinations.

Hyper loops have vehicles travel in a vacuum and are expected to compete with MagLev trains and may be capable of speeds of 700 miles per hour.

South Korea has tested a hyper tube train and it achieved a speed on 621 miles per hour.

Passenger drones

“We could definitely make a flying car – but that’s not the hard part. The hard part is, how do you make a flying car that’s super safe and quiet? Because if it’s a howler, you’re going to make people very unhappy.”

Elon Musk

Entrepreneurs and companies, including Uber and Boeing, have developed prototypes of passenger drones that may eventually be used to whisk people from one place to another especially in congested cities.

If this becomes a widespread form of transportation, cities will have a lot of hardware above the streets and buildings. This will need to be managed to promote safety. Though, with advances in artificial intelligence, drones may be able to navigate and avoid obstacles and communicate with each other to fly safely in congested areas.

Imagine, though, being able to hail a drone to rapidly fly you over congested ground traffic to be at your meeting in 10 minutes instead of an hour later. Many are working on drones that can take you from door to door because of their vertical take off and landing abilities. So, you may be picked up by a pilot rather than a driver. You might not even be flown to your destination by a human. Boeing is working on an autonomous electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle (eVTOL).

Autonomous personal vehicles

Personally owned vehicles are moving toward autonomous driving. We are still not there yet, but when we are, it will open up opportunities to work, while we are commuting in our own cars, trucks, or whatever.

If you like your commute as time to listen to the radio, your favorite music, or audio books, you could still do this. In fact, you would be able to give it your undivided attention. It could also be an opportunity to get work done.

Conclusion

The future of work and travel for independent consultants looks bright. As remote work becomes more common and digital tools become more advanced, independent consultants will have more opportunities than ever to work from anywhere in the world.

Advances in the speed of transportation and autonomously driving personal vehicles will allow you to travel and work more efficiently.

Whether you’re a seasoned consultant, just starting out, or just wondering if you can be a consultant, this is an exciting time to be a part of the independent consulting community.
